We had a new home built this summer and the contractors seeded our lawn for us. There was straw everywhere! In the window vents, on the porches, everywhere! I thought they were going to spread it by hand, but I think they had a machine. It was a large area so I guess that makes sense. Most of it took hold and the grass has come up. But there are spots where we need to reseed. No grass...just dirt. If we don't bother, probably weeds will grow in those areas, and we don't want that! We have enough weeds already growing!
This reminds me of what the Bible tells us about spreading the Word of God. Jesus tells a parable of the sower in the book of Matthew:
A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell of rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no soil. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a large crop - a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. He who has an ear, let him hear." Matthew 13:3-9
He continues on in Luke:
This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear; and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they cannot believe and be saved. Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among the thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. The seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop. Luke 8:11-15
It occurred to me that even as my husband and I get a second chance at reseeding our lawn, so I believe we have second and third and even more chances in sharing the salvation news of Jesus Christ with those we have shared before, but didn't see results. We should never give up on those who we want saved but aren't "getting it"! Continue to pray! Continue to share the Good News! One of these days, the soil in their souls will be ready, and the seed will take hold. God will supply the rest. Just keep sowing! It is time to reseed!!
